Francis BourgeoisDulwich Picture GallerySir Francis peter lewis Bourgeois was christened 4 november 1753 Saint Anne Soho Westminster London and died 8 january 1811. He was the son of Isaac emmanuel and Elizabeth Gordon.
He was the grandson of Emmanuel francois, from a noble family of Giez, Grandson, Yverdon, Switzerland. He was the painter of the King of Poland Stanislas in 1791, member of the Royal Academy in 1793, and the painter of the King Georges III in 1794.
From the Bourgeois's, 1450-2000, genealogy.
DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY Located across the Thames a few miles from the Houses of Parliament, Dulwich Picture Gallery's formation is closely linked with the lives of Noel Desenfans (1744-1807) and Francis Bourgeois (1753-1811), picture dealers who were commissioned by Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski, the last king of Poland, to assemble a collection of Old Master paintings for the creation of a National Gallery. Due to the king's forced abdication in 1795 as a result of Russia, Prussia and Austria's partitioning of Poland, the paintings never reached Warsaw, leaving Desenfans and Bourgeois with over 180 exceptional paintings in their possession. After opening the collection to public view from his home in London, Desenfans willed these pictures to Bourgeois, who bequeathed them to Dulwich College. Desenfans also left an endowment for the construction of a gallery, with the stipulation that the noted architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837) design the new building. Bourgeois, Sir, Peter Francis, (1753 - 1811) English painter and collector of Swiss parentage. His work as a painter is of high quality, and he is remembered for his bequest of 371 paintings to Dulwich College; they formed the nucleus of the Dulwich College Picture Gallery, which opened to the public in 1814. This was the first public art gallery to be opened in England, predating the National Gallery in London by a decade.
Oxford Dictionary of Art, Oxford University Press 1997. Bourgeois, Sir, Peter Francis (1753 - 1811) English painter. He was court painter to Stanislaus II, King of Poland, and later landscape painter to George III. His principal fame rests on his art collection, which he acquired from the dealer Noel Desenfans and left as a legacy to Dulwich College.
Bloomsbury Guide to Art, Bloomsbury 1996.
Connoisseur and philanthropist. He left his magnificent art collection (which was originally acquired on behalf of the King of Poland) to Dulwich College, which comissioned a special gallery at Dulwich, designed by the incomparable Sir John Soane, to house it. Soane included a mausoleum for Sir Francis Bourgeois in the building, which is still open to the public.
